U2 was in town last night. And as you can tell by the title, I did not go.
Not only did I not go, I did not care.
This is not some attempt to look cool by hating something. And I really do not hate U2…I just do not care. Which I think is sad. I used to like their music; there are several songs I still like by them. I just do not want to spend time and money to see them in concert.
I think that part of my apathy comes from the fact that Bono is socially and politically active. I really get sick of the actors and performing artists that feel the need to tell us about who to vote for, what to care for, and what to think. Just because you have a microphone does not make you an expert on politics, finances, or other social causes.
I do have to give Bono credit; he appears to genuinely care, and has certainly done a lot more leg work than anyone else in the group I just mentioned. For the record, I am not criticizing his motives or his beliefs. However, there is a part of my mind that lumps him in with the rest of the performers that know absolutely nothing about a subject, and prove it every time they open their mouths.
All I want is a performer that does their job well, without making me think about abused animals, starving children, or who I voted for. Is that really too much to ask? Sometimes…I just want to be entertained. Not all the time, mind you. But if you’re a musician, stick to music. Thanks.
